I've had some questions asked, but this was true 20 & 30 years ago as well. The only time it was slightly tense was when I was recording calls to prayer in a Muslim country in 1984, & was asked by a group of young men why I was doing that. This was long before the current tensions between Islam & the West & I had merely to explain I was interested in the cultural soundscape of Malaysia, same as taking photos, but with a tape recorder. I have avoided any recording in Muslim countries since 9/11, though. Scott Fraser |
