Hi Molly,

Check the archives, this question is asked all the time.

It all depends on budget and what you want. Do you want things small,
super high quality, both, etc? If you're really looking for ENG
equipment I might wonder why you're asking US this question. It's
true we discuss equipment a lot, but this group is very much focused
on nature recording specifically.

The Fostex FR2LE seems to be a good device for $500. If you have tons
of dough get the Nagra ARES IIBB [$2000+]. If you can handle a bigger
device get a Sound Devices 7 Series [$1800-4200]. There are of
course, a zillion other ones.

Lavs: Do you need wireless? We don't really discuss that too much.
try RAMPS for that. Wired lavs...Shure WL183 is a winner with this
group. Sony ECM 55's are good. At higher prices you can get better
and smaller stuff...Tram, Countryman, etc. This kind of thing all
depends on budget. For ambient recording the Sonic Studios DSM series
mics are well regarded, but aren't exactly sold in a regular lavalier
format.

Can I take this moment to bring up to the group the idea of a FAQ
document that we might put together? Clearly the very same exact
question is asked every few weeks. I know this has been mentioned
before but perhaps we can take some of oryoki's superb lists and put
them in a file and just point everyone there. I don't suppose we have
sticky's with this forum, since it's email based also. But this FAQ
would be perfect for a sticky thread that stays at the top.

Danny
