Hi Suzanne

The latest mini-disk offering from Sony the MZ RH1 is USB2 so will download=
the files very quickly, via the SonicStage software, and is probably the b=
est bang-per-buck you are likely to get. Plus it has the added advantage if=
you ever feel like starting recording say 'more seriously' you have an exc=
ellent recorder to do just that with. It is very compact and would easily s=
lip into an inside pocket and be completely unobtrusive. One thing you can =
do on it which is really useful for long recordings is to set it to automat=
ically create a track mark say every 10 minutes. Then when you come to down=
load instead of downloading say a one and a half hour recording you can dow=
nload 10 minute chunks which can be joined together in something like Audac=
ity a free audio editor.

I use the latest SonicStage software and have to say I find it a breeze to =
use and downloads are so much faster now it is USB2.

Otherwise you might like to have a look at the offerings from Olympus:

http://www.olympus.co.uk/voice/

This is the UK site for Olympus by the way but should show you what is avai=
lable. Again some of these you can download to computer by USB. But they ca=
n be two thirds the cost of say the Sony MZ RH1, I know the Olympus recorde=
rs include a mic but you can get some very cheap personal mics these days l=
ike this:

Hope the above is of some use to you.

Phil

Subject: [Nature Recordists] Digital Recorder Suggestions

I need some suggestions for a good portable digital recorder. We
have been using a Sony Mini Disc unit, but the time it takes to
convert the files from audio to digital is discouraging. We'd like
to be able to have the file already in digital-audio format so that
all we have to do it move the file onto the computer and thus cut out
about an 1 1/2 hours of work.

I'm not sure what is even available. The unit needs to be small, as
would fit in a coat pocket, and light. Our recordings are not
nature, but speech (as in seminars or teaching) so the mic we have is
the kind that clips to a collar or tie. Great mic, which we'd like
to reuse (sorry don't know the exact brand name).

I appreciate your help in advance.
