Clint,

you've said much about gear but not much about what sort of thins you 
want to record, at what typical distances and in what sort of an 
environment. Some fill in about that would help people point you in the 
right direction. For instance, are you after recording stereo 
soundscapes, or individual birds? If individual birds are you aiming at 
the 20m or 100m sort of range. One mic/recorder combo won't cater for 
all cases, and you'll be running a very different rig for soundscapes 
than for species recordings. Given your background and location I'd 
hazard a guess you would favour ambient soundscapes, in which case a 
good M/S rig or spaced omnis would brobably serve you better than a 
shotgun(s).

Of your gear choices I'd suggest Edirol R09 input noise is probably too 
noisy for nature recording with an unamplified mic though it works a 
treat with the Telinga parabolic dish and the amplified steroDATmic and 
handle with 3.5mm jack.
