DAT recorders are still great toys, but their reliability not high
enough for very critical needs. I definitively suggest to get a 7xx.
A Fostex FR2LE could be enough in terms of sound quality and probably
reliability too, but 7xx are definitively superior when powering
flexibility, robustness, and configurability are concerned.
A hint I think important in hot and humid conditions is to take a lot
of care when you move in and out of air conditioned environments,
including cars, and, in my special experience, ships. If you have to
stay in air conditioned environments it is a good opportunity for
drying your equipment, bags, silica gel, etc, (maybe using a heater
such as a hair dryer) but when you go out you need to keep your equip
in sealed bags until they reach the outdoor temperature. Otherwise
you risk to get them wet because of condensation on cold surfaces.
Camera lens, DAT tape drums, all electronics, condenser mic
membranes, battery contacts etc may get very wet for condensation and
cause a lot of troubles, even damages.
