Steve,

I once did a test recording of a simple kitchen timer (the kind that sounds=
 like an old fashioned alarm clock).

I recorded it at 10 feet through about 75 feet and the difference between e=
ach recording was absolutely astounding. I would never have believed that s=
mall changes in distance would make such significant difference in the soun=
d.

I didn't try filtering these recordings to correct for distance but I think=
 it could be done visually by spectra comparison and ultimately give you so=
me idea of corrections were needed for various distances.

An interesting thing is that I have never noticed such a significant change=
 in natural sounds verses distance as I did with the timer maybe because it=
 is a single and constant sound source.
