Yes and, at last last, there are high-quality, highly compatible mics
to invest the savings from a ~$300 Hi-MD recorder into. (no extra
boxes, bulky mics etc).
Many recorders will retain 1/8" stereo PIP; I noticed the $1000 Nagra
ARES does. PIP operation does not seem to compromise quality, so at
the point you buy a recorder with an unbalanced mic jack without PIP,
you could make a DIY battery powered supply to insert in-line (or
Klas might be able to add one to the purchase price of an EMKS-23.
Sound Professionals also sells them for around $70). The capsules can
probably be wired to run on phantom power too (though you'd need to
spend over $500 for a recorder today that can compete with HiMD/PIP
low-noise performance). I know Klas is not keen on supplying them as
phantom because PIP is just as good and so elegant.
