This more or less agrees with my experience with the Stereo DAT mic
element. I view the ambiance recorded as "local" and only the center
picking up from long distance. I'm not sure about a hole in the center
of the ambiance as your diagram would imply. I more view the overall
polar pattern as a pear shape with the stem being the long end.

BTW, back to the subject of of the internal battery. What I did with
that handle from the first was recharge it using 9.4volt NIMH
rechargables rather than alkaline batteries. That worked fine, but I had
to have them on hand in the field. That's what I mean by having extra
batteries to maintain as everything else was running on AA's. I
definitely did not like recording with a battery plugged into the
external connector, so anticipated and kept the internal charged.

I more or less consider mics as lifetime investments. On that scale
having a custom battery internal to the handle is a long term risk, even
if it takes a long time to go bad.

Another note, you can move the Stereo DAT mic in the focus of the dish
just like you can with the Dual Science, in fact you should. I set up
the focus of mine for something calling a hundred yards out most of the
time. But if you want to be picky you can do it for each caller.

Folks should also realize there are 8 mic elements combined in the
Stereo DAT. Each channel is a combo of 4, which are not all at the same
location, so focus is a combo of those.
