Hi

If you can afford it, have a look at the Sony MZ RH1 Hi-MD mini-disc
recorder. It has great mic-amps for the price and allows you to
record in linear PCM.
Here is a link to a site which sells them, the MZM200 is the MZ-RH1
but with a few extra 'goodies'. But do a search for the MZ-RH1 as it
will be more economic:

It would work well with the shure mics that have been recommended and
make a nice kit to get out there and start recording.

Here is a link to those shure mics:

You will need to make some sort of wind shield for the mics but there
are a couple of DIY projects around, using tea-strainers and faux-
fur. Which cost far less than buying a propriety one.

There is another option as regards recorders and that is the new
Fostex FR2-LE. It has not hit the stores yet or to be tested but it
could be a good alternative to the Hi-MD. It looks like it might cost
about 50% more than say the MZ RH1, that's on UK pricing.

I would also have a look here:

And a look here, which is a link from the above page:

This should give you an insight to Hi-MD and what it is capable of.
