I was perhaps unkind Phil in saying it was useless in the wind
though I did emphasize "strong" winds ! I use a Reinhardt Whisper
system on the ME67 mic capsule and also his pistol grip to hold the
mic. It was expensive - about =A3200 but works really good in up to
light to moderate winds.

However, the Telinga will grab calls in high winds easily without
distortion/roaring sounds. For me this is great as Crossbills are
often found in high valleys in Deeside and the winds, especially
recently, have been persistent and strong. The recordings have much
tree noise - even Scots Pines create an unbelievable racket, but I
get get calls from birds and ID them easily if they are close to the
mic. A shotgun would be very limited in this context IME. In ideal
conditions I have had crossbill flight calls at over 200 yards with
Telinga and they are black on the sonogram. These are "soft" calls
remember !
