I guess we have to conclude that there is wide variation in
performance between production samples of the H4.  Maybe the
manufacturer of the H4 has poor quality control?  It seems important
to purchase the H4 from a vendor which will allow you to return the
recorder without financial penalty if it proves to be a noisy one.

Speaking of preamps: Klas, have you started production of your
portable preamp design?
