I've never used one but according to the R4 manual p.61, you can set
the pre-record buffer from 1 second up to 29 seconds (stereo 16/44), 9
seconds (stereo 24/96) or 4 seconds (quad 24/96). See also

Preamp quality is another question. p.84 says the digital output
residual noise level is -90 dBFS with mic input level at minimum (-23
dBu FS), with 1 kohm load at mic input. So at minimum gain, the mic
input noise is -113 dBu with 1k source impedance. No doubt it's
somewhat better with 150 ohm impedance and higher gain, but no idea
how much.
Even at minimum gain, you get only 90 dB SNR. That would fit into 15
bits! So it can record 24 bits, but 9 of those bits (16 through 24)
are just noise.
