At NAMM 2007 in Anaheim last week, Samson showed a
prototype of a new recorder named the Zoom H2. This
unit is noteworthy because of its low price, only $200.
The Zoom H2 is a two channel recorder that digitizes
audio at rates up the 24/96. It records to SD flash
memory cards (no word about SDHC support). Battery
power type is unknown.
External mics are supported through a 3.5mm TRS plug.
The Zoom H2 provides 5V DC to support "plug-in power"
mics. The H2 also has a three microphone array at the
top of the recorder, set up for mid/side recording
(that's one mid, and two side mics).
The Zoom H2 is a little larger than the M-Audio Microtrack
2496 and Edirol R-9, but it still can be held and operated
in one hand. There's a photo of the prototype here

A short MOV video file showing the prototype is here:

This file can take a long time to load.
The Zoom H2 sounds like it would be a good companion to
a small external preamp like the unit Klas is designing.
A $200 recorder and a $250 external preamp will almost
certainly provide superior performance to the $400
all-in-one recorders from M-Audio, Edirol and Marantz.
Delivery of the Zoom H2 reportedly will start in May of
this year.
