regarding recording equipment- I just got a Sony HiMD having used a
variety of other MD gear. It is mechanically louder than I would like,
and a bit slow to access the disc (eg. Table of Contents writing).
However I do find it perfectly usable. With the MD working inside my
backpack, the disc writing noises are muffled well enough for
everything I've tried so far- but I do not own "premium" microphones
and have not tried really quiet places.
I enjoyed the longer record time of the Hi-SP mode this weekend, using
my MZ-RH1 to record a 3-hour nature walk on the beach, looking at
elephant seals. (They are large and odd-looking creatures- their
vocalizations sound like gurgling plumbing.) I think my next project
is to make some more effective windscreens for my small lav mics. The
small foam pieces from Radio Shack just are not working- probably a
fuzz-ball mini-"zepplin" is needed for a windy beach.
