An external preamp will provide a line-level output
that is compatible with the minidisc line input.
I've attached below a list of "pocketable" preamps,
units that are battery powered and small like the
minidisc recorder. It's generally true that the
more you pay, the better-sounding the preamp. But
no one has compared these gadgets to each other,
so we can't say which is the best value.
Klas Strandberg, maker of the Telinga microphone
series, has recently told us that he has a new
design for a portable mic preamp. No price or
delivery information is available yet, but many
of us are eager to check this unit out.
A second option worth considering is to replace your
minidisc with a model that does have a mic input.
The Sony Hi-MD minidisc has an excellent preamp.
The least expensive Hi-MD model with mic input is the
Sony MZ-NH700. New NH700s can be purchased on eBay
for about $150.
Tell us what you decide to do.
