Very, very few have optimum listening setups. Most studios don't even
have suitable listening setups when it comes to resolving the full
dynamic range. I think that's why most process at a amplified level.

It's one of the reasons I do most of my work with headphones. I can
simply hear more of the dynamic range of the recording with them.

Working with computers you always have their noises. And most houses
have 60 cycle hum behind everything. I can see how a stone house would help=
.

Right now at my home there is the sound of the destruction of 30 acres
of lovely hardwood forest and the underlying soil to satisfy the greed
of a developer. Six days a week during all daylight hours.

I think that's the bottom line, you should always strive for the best
recording in the field, for each and every channel you record. If it's
not in that recording it won't exist.
