hi dave:

in my experience, if you are using good preamps,
such as those i understand are in the 700-series recorders,
you will hear the tell-tale self-noise of the VP88 in your recordings

i used one for many years while that was all my kit budget would allow,
but was very happy to finally move over to neumann M/S rig several
years ago
(and from the chat on this list, i would think the sennheiser is
quieter still)

the shure is a fine mic for the price
but there are several quieter options if you can stomach the price bump

cheers
kent
