Hi John--
Carol Campell at 1-800-255-9665 ext #2920 would probably send you a
sample if you told her you were with the sound recording group who
wants to buy 1 or more rolls.

I'm not too concerned about construction quality as long as the pile
is long and this stuff has a 3.5" pile. The cheaper faux fur I
bought proved to work a bit better because the backing had a slightly
looser weave.

$10.15/yard is not a great deal price-wise. There are numerous places
one can buy black shag with 2" pile for $18-20 a yard.

This product looks like it could be Monterey Mill's Black Shag 3.5"
pile for $23/sq yard (1.5 yards minimum)
http://www.mendels.com/fur_solids.html (scroll down to, "Long Pile
Shag Furs").

I'd buy less than five yards too if the split worked out easier that
way. I just don't have the time to juggle than handling right now.
