If it's truly a 1/8" plug that could be the problem. Most recorders are
Message: 3.
Subject: 5mm not 1/8". They are similar sizes, but 1/8" is smaller than 3.5mm
(3.18mm =3D 1/8"), so a 1/8" plug fits loose. This is more than enough to
cause problems, particularly if the jack in the recorder is worn. About
the only cure is to replace the plug with a 3.5mm.

Walt,
It is my belief that in reality there is no difference between the so calle=
d
1/8th inch jack and the 3.5mm jack.
I suspect that the jack was designed in Japan and since they are a metric
country it was probably designed to be 3.5mm. However, since the USA
steadfastly refuses to adopt the metric system they needed to be able to
describe the jack in terms that Americans would understand and so it became
known as a 1/8th inch jack because it is roughly that size. I simply do not
believe that equipment sold in the USA uses a different sized jack from the
rest of the world.
In any event the contacts are spring loaded and so a few fractions of a
millimetre (manufacturing tolerances) would not be significant. Dirt and
corrosion on the contacts is a much greater problem.
It is about time that the USA got its act together and ceased to be 'the
only one in step' as far as the metric system is concerned.
