Nature Recordists,

I am a graduate student at Humboldt State University in California and
would like to record Great Gray Owls as a part of my graduate thesis
project. I would be very grateful to get any recording advice from you
before I begin this project. I need help to determine what equipment
will be the most effective, and how to use it properly. This species
calls at a low frequency range (about 200-400 hz). Currently I have
access to a few microphone systems, a Seinnheiser ME62
omni-directional microphone attached to a 20 inch parabolic reflector,
and a ME66 shotgun mic. Which set up do you think will be better to
record Great Gray Owls?

Another part of my project involves passive recording by setting up a
digital recorder with a powerful battery supply that will continuously
record for weeks at a time. The objective is to look at vocalization
behaviors i.e. when they call most frequently, vocal repertoires, etc.
My problem with this is that I don't know what microphone set up will
be best for making quality recordings. As I mentioned above great gray
owls call at a very low frequency range, but they are also not very
loud. I fear that it may be too difficult to make recordings without
amplifying the signals. I think a dish would be too large and
impractical, but is there any horn system (like a woofer) with folds
that will amplify the low frequency sound waves? I have a small budget
for this project, and would also be willing to build the horn system,
I just dont know how big it should be, the geometry of the folds in
the woofer and ultimately if it will work. Any advice or help you can
suggest would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Cameron Rognan
