recording

Doug Oade is working on a modification to the Marantz PMD671 to meet
the needs of the most discriminating nature recordists. The modified
recorder is likely to cost less than $1500 (my estimate), while
offering performance similar to much more expensive gear. Here's what
the web site says:

"Marantz PMD671 Super Mod

This will offer the greatest speed, detail and transparency along with
the lowest noise possible in the analog signal path . This upgrade
will be optimized for high gain applications. Useful for nature
recordings, FX, voice or any time low noise and very low audible
distortion along with high gain is needed....It will offer a gain
range of -60dB to -30 dB, a range of -50dB to -20dB available upon
request.

(Availability and price TBA)"

The Oade modification replaces the stock analog input electronics, and
removes a number of standard features (like the built-in microphones).
So your Marantz warranty is definitely voided by the upgrade.

Oade has sold modified PMD671s to concert tapers for several months,
and the reviews have been very positive. I look forward to learning
how the "Super Mod" PMD671 compares with field recorders like the
Sound Devices 722. The modified PMD671 has a good chance at becoming
the price/performance leader.
