Hello Vidas,
Thank you for your generous compliments. Since you already own one
mkh-20, that means you are already halfway to owning two =96 the
sensible route to go if its within your budget.
Translations of Jecklin's descriptions of his Jeckilin Disk found on
the web, state that it is designed for use with omnis only. However
from what I can recall, those notes never explain why. Perhaps
choosing multi-pattern mics would give you a chance to experiment, and
you might discover something great. I don't know the AKG C4000B, I'll
have to look up.
To understand why I use NT1-As (cardioids) with a barrier (similar to
a Jecklin Disk) you might want to know how the combination evolved.
I decided on NT1-As for a few reasons: I had budgeted $400 for mics. I
thought about the NT4, but decided the NT1-A offered better noise
specs and more versatility for the same price. I found a sequential
pair at a local store so I bought them.
I used them for a while without a barrier like a normal person might,
but then I attended my first Nature Sounds Society workshop. I
returned home with my mind swimming in possibilities, and like Dr.
Frankenstein began piecing together my creation. I took measurements
of my own head, including the space between my ears, and applied them
to the design. After a couple evolutions in I settled on the rounded
wedge barrier. Not quite a Jecklin Disk, kind of ORTF but not really,
I like to think binaural but that's a stretch. The combination
produces nice results, so I'll stick with it for a while =96 at least
until I come up with some new mics or am inspired work on a new design.
