As I posted 10 days ago some are filtering through in the UK. Having
looked at one then, I decided to buy one from my local Sony Centre on
Sat. So having tried it out yesterday first thoughts:
Its really great to only have to slide one knob to start recording -
and still be in manual rec mode - and I dont have to worry about how
long the slide button was going to last on my old 900. Record quality
seems good - I suspect that my recording level is set slightly lower
than before - but this would need to be tested.
Its good to see both chanels shown for recording level. Though I do
find the luminescent display a little difficult to read in v bright
light - though I havent as yet removed the protective film. For dusk
and night time recording it will be be great.
I was worried by the feel as to how tough it would be when I first saw
it - but on using it seems ok.
One of my initial thoughts were that with all the operating buttons on
the top edge it would be simple to make a case to hold it, with a
strap round my neck, so keeping it safe. However the socket for the
remote is towards the bottom of the edge ie below the mic and line in
sockets, which means that the cable for the remote comes out at the
bottom as the plug turns 90 degrees and so would be fouled if put in a
case. A shame - if the sockets had been reversed then it would have
been straight forward.
If one hand is holding a mic, then the other can operate the recorder
quite successfully.
The initial battery charge from the usb port took under the hour
stated in the book - so nice and quick.
So yes my first thought are that it makes it all a lot easier, a
recordists Hi-MD at last.
Oh yes, my old MD discs will transfer to computer.
Hope this is of use.
Andrew.
