The easiest way to do it is to "gang" the channels while recording.=20
ie: channel "a" fader controls the volume of "a&b" , monitor with a m/
s decode in the headphones.
To be honest when it comes to m/s decoding I usually end up just=20
doing a +3db mix on the side channel, mid at 0 db. 9/10 times it=20
sounds right to me.

Remember that most digital recorders scales are usually somewhere=20
between a vu and peak meter , I'd say think of it as more of a peak=20
and -20 dbfs is too low for a loud bird call. I try and keep the=20
average at -20 knowing that most loud calls will be safe with 20 db=20
headroom. But yes, I have been proved wrong on several occasions....
