> 702: Save about $500 by giving up the 722's hard drive
I think the 722 remains the better option.
You'll need to spend that $500 savings to buy Compactflash
cards to use for data storage. So the cost remains about
the same.
The 4GB Sandisk Ultra II is a well-regarded Compactflash
model. It costs close to $170. $510 buys three such cards,
probably enough storage for a long day in the field.
One 4GB Compactflash card provides room for 6 hours of
stereo cuts if you record at 16/48, or 2 hours at 24/96.
Contrast this with the 40GB of storage in the 722. That's
20 hours of 24/96, or 60 hours 16/48 stereo cuts, many days'
worth of recordings.
If you're traveling with the 702, on the other hand, you will
need a place to offload the day's recordings so you can erase
the Compactflash cards and be ready for the next day. If you're
traveling with your notebook computer, no problem. If not,
you'll need a "portable storage device" (PSD), essentially
a battery-powered hard disc with Compactflash input. That's
more money spent and more to carry around.
