Just to add a bit to past "bottoming out" conversations.
I went a hike last weekend at Silver Falls State Park, and decided I
must return to try and record the amazing thundering resonance in the
enormous cave carved behind the falls.
On Wednesday afternoon I returned to record the North Falls.
Some pictures and descriptions of the falls can be found at this url.

First I tried the NT1-As with the Sony MZ-RH10 and the rolls 224,
directly behind and facing the falls and that seemed to work fine.

I also set up a Sony ECM-MS907 with a MZ-N707 somewhat to the right of
the falls but still in the cave and that also worked ok.

I then switched the NT1-As to the PMD-670 and it did not work well at
all. I didn't have time to remove the panel and switch on the
high-pass or the mic attenuator or otherwise mess around with
settings, but at least I know it's not from the mics physically
shaking from the ground rumbling as I had originally suspected from
previous occurrences of the problem. Here's a snapshot of the
distorted waveform:

Next I tried the rh-10 with the Shure 183s shoulder mounted, and that
combination also created horrible distortion no matter what the gain
setting or the mice sensitivity setting. Though the problem cleared up
when I left the booming roar of the cave.
And finaly, I tried the rh-10 with the ms-907, set up exactly the same
as previously with the mz-n707. I sounded fine for about two seconds,
and then distortion set in.
I'm glad to find that with nt1-A's the rh10 holds up where the pmd-670
failed. However, I'm a bit perplexed that rh10 broke up where the n707
did just fine. Of course as usual, more investigation is due, and all
comments are welcome.
