I thought the comments about the Tascam HD-P2 were useful.
In the author's opinion:
-- the HD-P2 feels solidly constructed, ready for a life
in the field.
-- the controls and menus are easy to understand and use
(This should not be underestimated. Sometimes I feel like I'm
preparing to launch the space shuttle when I need to make a
change to the settings of the Sound Devices 722.)
-- the HD-P2's shuttle/data wheel is hard to reach when the
recorder is carried in a field bag
-- HD-P2's mic pre's are good, but recordings sound better when
using the Sound Devices MP-2 external mic pre (presumably connected
to the HD-P2's analog line input)
-- best results were recorded at 24/96 using the MP-2 mic pre
-- (HD-P2 + MP-2 + several Compactflash) brings the investment
close to the cost of the Sound Devices 722. (to about 80%, actually)
The author thought the 722 was worth the extra money.
These observations are helpful to someone making a purchase
decision.
