A few years back, about 8 of the 24 "1 bit" portable Sony CD players
I bought for an installation would not reproduce higher amplitude
insects and a few bird calls from mastered mixes without
break-up/distortion. Three different Sony models all had the problem
($45-80). Given, Rich, that you're mixing for general consumption,
I'd try narrow parametric filtering on just the dominate (high)
frequencies of the warbler calls to lower their amplitude without
making the overall mix dull. Or, notch EQ just individual calls if
Audition or your mix layout/patience will accommodate this. The
incidents I encountered had similar amplitudes to what you describe
and usually required taming in 1-3 high Hz notches/pitches. If the
calls sound a bit "harsh" now, the eq could very well solve the CD
player problem, whatever the source of it is,... Eqium has a 15 day,
free trial. http://www.elementalaudio.com/products/eqium/index.html
