Mea culpa, inventing jargon. I meant "x" as a variable, as in 3-, 10
or 30-band (graphic) equaliser, as available in Sound Studio.

Many thanks for the helpful stuff coming in. Clearly it's much
more complicated than we had any idea and we'll be following
up the suggestions and links.

Meanwhile I think I'd rather be back outside, where the ambience
looks after itself.
