Since the batts are just DC, I'd think that they could be in an external package with standard (or non-standard) power plug. You might want to put a ferrite bead or choke on the incoming DC lines to keep any stray RF out. And if you're using caps to isolate the resistor pairs I'd think they'd want to go inside the shield/case with the XLRs. The phantom box that I made used poly caps for DC blocking in the signal path to the output cable.
