When I mentioned battery testers I meant something that puts
a load on the battery as opposed to just checking open-circuit
voltage with a high-impedence DMM. For example, my little
cheap Radio Shack tester (22-093) puts 80 ohms across a 9v
batts, and 3.6 ohms across single cell batts. An alkaline
batt that's weak will show a high reading that will slowly
drop into that load.
