News from AES in NYC:

Tascam announced the HD-P2, a "professional grade" two channel
recorder, up to 24/192 quantization, and a built-in timecode
generator. Compactflash is used for storage.

The HD-P2 price is reported to be less than $1250.
Delivery is supposed to start in November.

At 10.25"W x 7.75"D x 2.5"H, the machine is a little bulky,
but its weight of less than 32oz including batteries that
yield 5.5 hours of recording time sounds quite good.

I didn't see any mic input specs, but I'm sure Tascam will
update its web pages soon. The closest competition for the
new Tascam recorder is likely to be the Fostex FR2 (larger
and heavier) and Oade-modified Marantz PMD671 (24/96 only).
I believe Doug Oade will offer a modified version of this
machine, with improved mic preamps.
