Hi folks !
I recently discovered that sonograms can be turned
back into sound using a software for MS
Windows written by Peter Meijer called "The vOICe"
which is originally
designed to help the blind by converting images from a
camera such a mobile
phone camera into sound which is then interpreted by
the blind user to
identify the nature of the scenery.
The software can be downloaded on his website
http://www.seeingwithsound.com/voice.exe (432 KB)
This software has a limited resolution due to the
application it has been designed for but
if converting from a sound file such as WAV to a
sonogram and the reverse conversion were possible with
little loss one would expect sound analysis software
to have interfaces in such a way that sound
manipulations would be as easy as image touching.
Cutting and cleaning parts of the sonogram image would
then be easy ways to separate bird calls and remove
noise.
I would be happy to hear from users on this list who
can suggest software (preferably freeware/open source)
that actually does this ie. allow sound manipulation
through an image manipulation based approach.
thanks and best wishes
