Shyamal You can do this in Adobe Audition ver1.5 while working in the "spectral" view and using the marque selection tool. It's great for removing things like individual dog barks etc by cutting the offending sound and pasting (back in the hole) a piece of clean background sound from an area close to the cut. It's much faster to edit in this visual way as well. Not free software however!
