On a plug-heavy session yesterday, I found that adding the full
multi-meter version of Inspector XL to the master channel bogged things
down pretty badly -- on a G3 iBook. In general, the more graphically
intense a plugin is, the more it will slow down my display.

You're right about that. Many folks also overlook another major source
of vehicle noise: the drive train. Muffle the engine, rubberize the
road surface, and you still have a lot of noise coming from most
vehicles at higher speeds. Snowmobiles are probably the most
outstanding example of this.
