That's great. A closet environmentalist is more effective than being
overly outspoken and stuck with the burden of it being part of a
religion.

Consumer minidiscs have never really been repairable. I have repaired
a couple mic plug to pc board breaks and ran the self diagnostics as
seen in the repair manuals posted for free. Other than that it is a
work or toss item due to the difficulty in repairing surface mount
miniture machines. I am sure that HHB and Marantz will support their
more expensive minidiscs for some years as both of those companies
have a fine track record in repair support.
In thinking back, CD's are approaching a record in popular long life
use. Wire, 45's, LP's, and Cassettes never really lasted that long in
popularity.
Reel to reel tapes probably hold the record but am not even sure of that.
Because sonic environments are so much richer in the spring I will put
myself on hold for hardware updates until after the Xmas rush is over
and the Feb discounts are seen.
