I use e-bay but not for old laptops.  Locally you can find more people
that do not put any value on these old boat anchors.  It is also very
helpful to play with a machine for a bit to determine if it will meet
a specialty audio need.  I would never go above $50.00 on an old
laptop purchase and you should find one cheaper. After all, if it
needs a battery that is a major expense more than the machine is worth
unless it uses a 12 volt supply that you can work around with external
supplies.

I still recommend the minidisc avenue first.
