That hiss

Subject: That hiss

How long does it take for the penny to drop? In my case a week or two.

There have been a number of postings discussing some mysterious hiss that
occurred with someone's recording. Lacking the technical knowledge fully to
understand the discussion, I deleted the messages.

Only now has it it occurred to me that among the messages I didn't notice
any reference to one important bit of history:

Am I not right in thinking that some considerable time ago, two
scientists (Penzias and Wilson, are the names that come to mind) spent much
time trying to find the cause of a mysterious hiss in their apparatus ...
and ended up getting a Nobel Prize for discovering it?

Cheers

Syd
