Hi David -

No problem.  Softsynth = "Software Synthesizer" .  This is just the ability 
of the soundcard to produce sounds of its own - a synthesizer - when 
triggered by something like MIDI device.  I say "onboard" - maybe I should 
have said "internal" - because many people who do need some kind of 
sound-producing module opt for an external one since most of the soundcards 
are pretty poor in this regard, although they can serve as a platform for 
playing samples and soundfonts.

If all you need it for is to play recorded sounds and possibly to have an 
analog/digital converter for recording sounds into the computer (which even 
Windows has a bone-simple version of) , then it's a moot point.
