If you don't need an onboard softsynth, from experience I can recommend two
interfaces/cards: the EMU 0404 PCI card, which has great connectivity -
1/4" ins and outs, MIDI, S/PDIF etc. They also make models with more I/O,
the 0404 has basically two. Then with my laptop I'm using an external USB
interface, the Tascam US-122. It's bus-powered, and so far has been
excellent, very stable and clean. Again, you can get more I/O in other
models, and of course you can spend a lot of money on a firewire interface.
(If I never see a Soundblaster again it will be too soon.)
