The Panasonic capsule is still a wonderful entry level microphone
option for those that can build and study a little. It is very flat,
very small, and very cheap. There are many people who have built
expensive microphones around these capsules and that will continue.

That said, I don't experiment with options I can not understand in my
own mind. Multiple intersecting domes would fit into that area and is
the likely reason for the defects in sound of this specific mic,
certainly not from the capsules. The Panasonic capsules are used in
some measurement microphones.=20

And yes they are higher self noise than normally sought after for
nature recording. So a single barrier or multiple capsule approach
makes sense to lower that. Modification of the wiring (Linkwitz
Modification) is also a good idea as they become closer matched and
can handle higher volumes. I previously posted examples of each and
can try and dig up that documentation if someone has a need but there
is already a bunch of stuff on the web regarding building microphones
from these capsules.
