Yes, very cheap plastic housing; mine scratched up just looking
at it.  Good thing that with the USB interface, there's not a lot
of reason to remove the card, unless you've got multiple cards
and need to swap during a session.

They sound good until the internal preamp starts to clip,
which occurs at moderate SPLs, and there's no pad switch.
So the concert tapers will hate this machine.

The metering is abissmal; it's way slow, it's mono, and has no peak hold.

Nor does it split on the fly when you push record.  If you set it
to split automatically it splits on a uselessly high and short
definition of silence, so you get lots of tiny files.

Seems like they had to hit a price point and nominally work.

Well, at least that's good news.  I've got to get a better
set of battery powered mics/external preamp w/meters before
I can really do any useful field recording with mine... my
current best small rig needs A/C, so I may as well bring
a real recorder along.  But the R-1 *is* a lot easier to
carry than the Masterlink in the road case.
