Then we should probably not portray our tests as make or break for the 
mics involved. More like minor data points, which is more like what they 
are.

And that would have been a single data point about how well the mics 
record jets. I actually try not to record jets in my nature recordings.

There is still fun, but it's more likely in finding new uses for 
something that someone else examined and did not produce commercially. 
There are many good designs for which there was no market. Of course all 
of nature recording is effectively no market. I do not have to think 
something I dream up is original to use it.

There have been many extremely talented full time professional mic 
designers. What we do is kind of child's play for them. In many cases we 
modify their designs without much understanding of what we are doing. I 
find more useful stuff by finding out what has been done by the pros. 
That does not mean I necessarily just recreate exactly what I know they 
did, but it does mean I understand their design as something to build on.
