Here's a quick comparison of the rated power of the built-in speaker
in some popular field recorders. These speakers were designed for
playback to someone sitting next to the machine, so their output is
low. Only the Fostex FR-2 has a speaker that is an improvement on
the cassette tape machines commonly used for field recording.
Model...........................speaker rating
Fostex FR-2 hard disc.............1000mw
Sony TCM 5000EV cassette tape......700mW
Marantz 222 cassette tape..........500mw
HHB Portadisc minidisc.............250mw
Marantz PMD-670 compactflash.......100mw
consumer minidisc..............no speaker
Please use playback in a responsible manner, and obey regulations
prohibiting its use.
