At least two participants in this group own the PMD670. The recorder
offers several features of pro recorders (e.g., larger meters,
controls that are easy to use, 5 second pre-roll buffer, records in
WAV as well as MP3, provides 48 volt power to pro mics, USB upload).
This set of features is not found in any recorder for less money.=20
The PMD670 is also smaller and lighter than most pro recorders.

The place where the PMD670 can be improved is in the quality of its
mic preamp. I consider the PMD670 recordings to be on a par with
consumer minidisc and DAT machines, which is to say, very good but not
at the level of quality of machines like the HHB Portadisc.=20

I have a colleague in Venezuela who is very happy with the PMD670, and
who chooses to use it in place of his Portadisc because it is less of
a burden to carry around all day (it's about 18 ounces lighter). The
PMD670 has proven to be reliable in hot/humid/dusty conditions in
South America.

I see the PMD670 web site advertises "up to 7 hours" battery life. In
my experience you should expect 2.5 to 3 hours if you plan to use
rechargeable AA cells. You'll ruin the batteries if you run them all
the way down to the point where the recorder shuts off.=20
