I've just purchased another pair of Shure 183s. For maximum
flexibility, I bought the version with a battery/phantom power
module, MX183BP. I figured that way I could use them with my Sharp MD
recorder, for which I made a mini-stereo plug adaptor from the TA4
connectors, or with professional mic inputs, phantom-powered through
the power modules.
I was disappointed to discover that the output level from the power
module is significantly lower, and the inherent noise higher, than
what you get with the raw mics on plug-in-power! I won't be able to
use them with the modules for nature recording. They'd be ok for
other applications like sound reinforcement or recording of
higher-level sources.
The last I heard Sound Professionals had discontinued selling 183s
(too bad), but I can make adaptors for the WL-183, the raw version
with the TA4 connector, or remove the connectors to "Y" them both
directly into a mini-stereo, the way SP packaged them.
