Re Rich's problem, I thought the 2Gb maximum file size was a Windows thing.
Logic has a maximum song length in bars, which is a function of the maximum
number of events a 'song' can contain. To increase the max lenth in terms of
time (minutes and seconds), you set a slower BPM tempo. I tend to use 80 BPM
now, which gives me around 1 hour 46 mins. When you say 'turn the midi stuff
off', is there another way of dealing with this?

I keep hearing good things about RME cards. I'm currently using an M-Audio
2496 and likewise am happy using quite modest monitors (ie good consumer
hifi from Tannoy). Since most of my work is producing for CD and
installations that will be played on systems like this or usually lesser, I
figure these are a reasonable measure to go by.
I bought the CBX in 1994 as a much cheaper alternative to Protools at the
time. I actually thought the EQ sounded better than Protools and I liked the
way it was a real-time processor based on non-destructive editing. Host
software was cubase running on an Atari Falcon, but it never worked 100%
reliable. Then after much angst, I switched to running it from Logic on the
Mac. Anyway it's a SCSI device and I couldn't get it to work with the G4, so
it's sat on the shelf for the last 3 or 4 years. Then at the weekend I tried
it out again and was yet again knocked out by the sound; it has a built-in
FX bank (reverb, chorus, flanging etc) and they really are sweet.
I've been quite happy with the native processing in Logic, but I hope to try
out some other plugins soon. I liked the Waves stuff for music mastering.
One of the great things about Logic for productivity is the screen set
feature. I don't know why other software hasn't copied this. I still keep
finding new ways of customising the layouts to improve my working methods.
But I've never found a way of exporting the list of files used in a 'song',
which would be useful. I emailed emagic about this, but their support line
has always been very flakey. (even worse for Waveburner)

I'm just getting used to OSX on a new Powerbook before taking the plunge
with Logic. But looking forward to having a mobile production base.
Best wishes Geoff.
