You might also have a look at Avisoft-SASLab Pro
(http://www.avisoft-saslab.com). This sound analysis software includes a gr=
aphic synthesizer that has
been specifically designed for simulating bird sounds (certainly for
researchers who investigate the mechanisms of animal communication). It als=
o allows to
scan natural sounds, which can then be modified and re-synthesized.

The European bird species in the following example have been synthesized
using a set of sinewave generators:
http://www.avisoft-saslab.com/synthesized.mp3 (312KB download).

In fact, it is not necessary to know the details about the vocal tract
anatomy of the birds. It would be sufficient to look at the spectrograms of
natural vocalizations. The frequency and amplitude envelopes taken from the=
se
spectrograms can be used to control the synthesizer.
