Be warned!
I have been using TDK Gold 700MB CD-Rs recently (made in Taiwan). They
seemed OK so I bought 2 stacks with 50 in each stack, from Big W department
store in Bathurst NSW (Australia).
I've noticed that almost ALL the blank CDs in one stack have some minute
flaw on the surface. An audio CD will burn OK but will then mistrack
because of that flaw, and is thus rendered useless. Maybe data CDs would
not be affected, I don't know.
This flaw is usually a tiny scratch about 2 mm in length, across the playing
surface. Position of the scratch is variable, might be near the start or
might be in the middle somewhere. (This scratch would not be seen by most
people, but I happen to be very short-sighted and can focus on surfaces up
close.) Occasionally the flaw will be some other sort of irregularity on
the playing surface.
It doesn't seem right that top brand CDs can be sold apparently without any
quality checks.
Verbatim CDs still seem OK, so I'll continue to use those. There is not
much choice of CD brands in rural areas of Australia. Seems to be Verbatim,
TDK or Imation.
Any one else had problems?
