Repair advise needed

I bought a new Sharp MD-DR7-A on EBay and now find that it no longer
works properly. The unit is the Japanese model and would need to be
returned to Japan for warranty work. Is this advisable or should I
find a repair shop in the USA and pay for the repair? The unit will
play both channels on a disk recorded in stereo but will only pick
up one channel of a stereo microphone. I base this on use in the
pause mode of record, I only hear sound from one channel in the
headphone. In the play mode it works fine. I have checked the menu
choices and looked in the jack port to see if the contacts look
normal. Tried wiggling the microphone plug around in the jack, also
switched microphones but had no change in the dead channel. The
unit did function correctly at first.
